When she was 14 Maureen was accepted to the Abbey Theater, where her fascination with classical theater and operatic music was explored. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after viewing an Maureen screen test. He became captivated by the beauty of her eyes. Laughton altered the name of Maureen's FitzSimons, from Maureen FitzSimons, to "Maureen O'Hara" it was a diminutive version of her last name. The name change happened prior to Laughton cast her in Jamaica Inn. As a contract holder to Laughton and Erich Pommer, her following film was scheduled to be shot in America (The Hunchback and Notre Dame (1939)) in the studio of RKO Pictures. This epic movie was a massive hit and Maureen's contract was eventually taken over by Laughton to RKO. Maureen was only 19 at the time she was starring alongside Laughton in two of her films.
